Description - A Gorgeous Vintage 980 sterling silver parrot brooch which can also be worn as a pendant. The parrot has a turquoise beak and eye, a speckled lapis blue head and a malachite body with black onyx wings and tail. The design has also been accentuated with bands of silver to highlight the wings and the head. There is a simple C pin and a bale attached on the back for a pendant chain. The brooch is 2.58 inches long by approx. .75 inches wide and the 980 silver mark is stamped on the back. The quality of the workmanship and the higher silver content suggests that the brooch has been handmade by a silversmith. The depth of the brooch is remarkable. There is a small crack in the turquoise beak and at the top of the tail and a few small spots or chips on the black and the malachite, otherwise in excellent condition.
The ancient Egyptians venerated green malachite as a symbol of joy. They associated it with the eternal cycle of life and referred to the afterlife as The Field of Malachite.
